Meet Our Doctor

Dr. James Sawyer is a life-long resident of Monticello, graduating from Monticello High School in 1978 and completing his undergraduate work at the University of Kentucky. He earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1986.

Dr. Sawyer is an active member of the Kentucky Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. He is a past-president of the Kentucky Optometric Foundation and of the Kentucky Optometric Association. He served on the Foundation’s board from 1992-2000. He was on the Kentucky Optometric Association’s Board of Trustees from 1993-2002, serving as president 2000-2001. Dr. Sawyer also serves on the Wayne County and Lake Cumberland District Boards of Health. He has been a member of the Board of Directors for the Monticello/Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and is a past-president of the Monticello Kiwanis Club.

In 1998, Dr Sawyer completed a three-year course of study in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma from the Southern Council of Optometrists in Atlanta, GA. At completion, he earned the Southern Diplomat in Glaucoma. In April 2001, Dr. Sawyer became a lifetime member of the Kentucky Head Start Association. He was awarded the President’s Award from the Kentucky Optometric Association for 2001-2002.

Dr. Sawyer was selected by the Consumer’s Research Council of America for inclusion in their “Guide to America’s Top Optometrists” for 2002-2003. He has volunteered, with other of the state’s optometrists, at the Kentucky Special Olympics State Meet by performing eye exams for the participating athletes. He regularly donates his services to the Kentucky Vision Project which provides eye care for Kentucky’s low-income families. Dr. Sawyer participates, on an ongoing basis, with the National Eye Institute and American Diabetes Association in diabetes education and the examination of diabetics.

They regularly attend educational conferences and seminars where they learn the most advanced methods and techniques of patient care.

They will help you during the exam itself, they will assist you with your frame and lens selections, with the fitting and care of contact lenses and even with the filing of your insurance paperwork.
